Overview
MAN Roland Druckmaschinen AG is the second largest printing press manufacturer worldwide and also a major truck producer. The company's products training department provides training for operators and service personnel located across the globe. The training is enhanced and prepared with the use of Computer Based Training (CBT) and documentation in digital format (Adobe Acrobat).
The Challenge
The challenge was to leverage the true power of the Web to develop interactive 3D training solutions for MAN. The company was looking to offer a more streamlined and efficient means to reach its customers in a cost effective manner. The company identified Web-based training as a possible solution, not only to reach its global customer base more cost effectively, but also to overcome the limitation of the static nature of CBT content.
Web-based training also provided real time interactive content that could be easily updated. But one question remained. How was MAN going to overcome bandwidth limitations and develop a comprehensive WBT program beyond the limitations of their current efforts?
The Solution
ParallelGraphics proposed to extend the value of Man's existing CAD resources for online training purposes. ParallelGraphics delivered a pioneering approach to develop an enterprise wide training solution for MAN. The company had already invested heavily in the creation of 3D CAD data but was unable to utilize this valuable resource on the Internet due to bandwidth limitations. Using ParallelGraphics' innovative technologies, MAN was able to utilize existing 3D CAD resources to develop online training manuals and assembly guides for employees and customers. This Web-based training solution greatly improved skill transfer, while also leading to increased efficiencies in the learning process.
"Our product training department has improved the development time for Web based training by over 20 per cent. Prior to utilizing ParallelGraphics solutions, we had to develop lighter versions of our CAD models from scratch, or reduce the number of polygons by hand. Their technology has allowed us to significantly reduce the time it takes to export our CAD on to the Web. It has, in short, been a real killer application for us," said Michael Gaubatz-Christ, Manager, Training Documentation, Digital Media and Network Solutions for MAN.
