3D solution for displaying real-time simulations of mechanical systems
Overview

dSPACE is a leading supplier of hardware and software solutions for developing and testing rapid mechatronic control systems. The company's systems enable manufacturers of controllers and ECUs to dramatically reduce their development times and costs while also improving product quality.

The Challenge

Real-time simulations are usually visualized by time histories or instruments but these methods remain more or less abstract. Consequently it is difficult to infer the motion of a simulated object, such as a car, simply from plots displaying forces or angles. The solution is a 3D animation that displays the movement of objects simulated on the dSPACE Simulator.

The Solution - 3D Online Animation

dSPACE developed MotionDesk, a 3D animation solution that displays real-time simulations of mechanical systems online. This powerful tool gives a new meaning to 3D animation within the dSPACE tool suite.

Using Internet Scene Assembler (ISA) from ParallelGraphics, dSPACE was able to overcome the difficulties of observing motion using time histories or display instruments, to create a dynamic and interactive visualization of 3D environments. This allowed complex procedures to be communicated in a much more intuitive and effective manner.

Dragging and dropping objects from ISA's online Create Gallery, 3D animations of simulated moving objects are created by using an intuitive navigation window, which displays both animated and static objects. The data for animation is then read out from the simulation and the moving objects are animated

Applications

MotoionDesk is primarily targeted at the automobile sector. Other applications include robotics and flight simulation.
